The Appleton Telulah 11 year old boys won the Wisconsin Little League State Baseball Championship on August 8th with an 8-3 victory over tournament host, Verona. Appleton went 3-2 in pool play earlier in the week with victories over Lowes Creek (10-5), Verona (10-4) and Antigo (7-6 in 11 innings) to advance to the semifinals.
In semifinal game, Appleton was the #3 seed and met Burlington the #2 seed. Appleton rallied to win the game with a 4-3 victory. Meanwhile the #4 seed, Verona upset the #1 seed, Germantown 7-2 to reach the finals. The championship game was rain delayed by a day but Appleton Telulah was ready and displayed solid pitching, great defense with clutch hitting to clinch the State Title over Verona.
The team had three goals this season that were achieved. The first was to play as a team, second was to win District and the third was to win State. Appleton Telulah advanced to the State Tournament with a 3-1 record in District play with 2 close games against Appleton Einstein and a 1-1 split with Appleton Lions. Winning the state title was a repeat performance since the 11 year old Appleton Telulah team won the state title last year (2008) in Ashland.
The 2009 team was coached by Nick Pflum and Bill Brunker with assistance from Rob Groves, Dave Herbeck and Jay Ourada. Team members include Alex Brautigam, Riley Brochtrup, Trent Brunker, Bennett Groves, Charlie Herbeck, Anthony Heinz, Parker Ourada, Simon Pflum, Isaiah Scheffler, Bryce Winnen and Jeremy Zeegers.
